Manufacturer Description

So many of John Barry's themes are instantly recognisable. Out of Africa must qualify as amongst the most popular of all, with its soaring French horns opening into high-range strings and flute. It's had countless recordings and concert arrangements, and so it's very familiarity is the benchmark by which this new recording stands. And happily, Joel McNeely and the RSNO rise to the occasion. Beguilingly there are only 35 minutes of score in the 160-minute movie, a fact that Barry has often cited when self-deprecatorily glossing over the score's Oscar win. The truth of the matter is that by seeing beyond the stunning photography and into what the film was really about, he communicates at a personal level that doubly impresses its audience. The epic romance could have been set anywhere, but by allowing the backdrop to speak for itself, we're respectfully in his debt for drawing attention to nothing less than the passion of the heart. --Paul Tonks

The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley
