ADES THOMAS

If you need convincing that Thomas Adès's music is worth more than just hype, this disc should do just that. Had it been only a technical exercise, the Chamber Symphony (1990) would still be remarkable for a 19-year-old. In fact its as good as anything Adès has yet done: four movements in one, that play off each other with a relaxed command of some already original material. These Premises are Alarmed, written for the opening of Manchester's Bridgewater Hall, is a slick showpiece for the 1990s; Concerto Conciso, written for Adès to direct from the keyboard, as entertaining to watch as it is to hear. ... but all shall be well combines the already typically Adèsian virtues of tension and anticipation, to the fore in Asyla (1998). This strikingly orchestrated work shows just what Adès can do given his head: the sense of atmosphere in the second part is matched by the febrile excitement of the third, manic only in the mind of the listener. Superb performances that sound as though the players have complete confidence in the music. Play the disc once, and so will you. --Richard Whitehouse
